A dog who spent nearly his entire life in a barn was rescued by a pair of dog groomers after his terminally ill owner asked a neighbor to remove him from the barn. The Great Pyrenees dog, named Lazarus, had been neglected for most of his 6- to 7-year life, and when the groomers pulled him from the barn, they went to work, shaving off some 35 pounds of matted fur that had grown unabated, according to Fox 11 News.

After his much needed shave and grooming, Lazarus was brought to the Big Fluffy Dog Rescue  based out of Nashville, Tennesee, for care.

His foster mom, Amanda Brooke Charsha-Lindsey, is overseeing Lazarus’ care, introducing him to the notion of being outside in a yard and helping him build muscle tone after so many years stuck in a barn stall.

“We did a lap around the yard to loosen Laz up and start building some muscle tone back, then he was free to sniff anywhere he desired,” Charsha-Lindsey wrote on her Facebook page. “He has decided this walking stuff is a pretty good thing.”

While the conditions in which Lazarus lived were sad, Charsha-Lindsey doesn’t want to focus on his past but, rather, his future and that of other rescue dogs she works with. She pretty much sums it up in this Facebook post.

I sincerely hope Laz makes you smile as much as he does me and others I know. He is a sweet boy. It is rare a single pup…
