Anubis, a guard dog who was brought from Egypt to the United States, has had an incredibly long and difficult journey, and we’re not just talking about the distance he’s traveled from his former home in Cairo.

The dog was once used to guard property in the Egyptian capital, but he barked at a trespasser who responded by cutting the animal’s nose off, according to The Dodo. After enduring that horrific incident, he was dismissed from his position and turned loose onto the streets. He wandered the city alone, sleeping under cars and undoubtedly craving affection, of any kind.

Anubis was eventually rescued by Egypt’s Animal Protection Foundation, who later turned him over to the Special Needs Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation (SNARR). The Louisiana-based organization (which also has a New York location) arranged to have the dog flown to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

“We’ve taken dozens of animals from them and brought them to the States, animals who otherwise would be in agony in a country that cannot care for them,” SNARR’s Lauren Connelly told The Dodo.

A group of volunteers drove the dog from New York to Fort Worth, Texas, before he eventually settled in with a long-term foster family in El Paso.

Anubis will be in foster care for up to six months, but Connelly reports that the family is in love with him, they just might become his forever family. It looks like Anubis is finally being given the love and tenderness that once seemed so far away.
