Every one deserves a second chance.

The Pit Bulls in Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback Michael Vick’s heinous and brutal dog-fighting ring suffered physical and emotional scars. After his arrest, the fates of more than 50 of the dogs hung in the balance; of those, one animal organization saved nearly half — and from that group five dogs went on to new lives and to have their stories told.

A new documentary called “The Champions” follows the rehabilitation and rehoming of five of Vick’s dogs with the help of Best Friends Animal Society. And now, according the the BFAS website, you can watch it via download or at an upcoming community screening.

“The Champions” follows five dogs from the moment they’re rescued to their lives with new owners. Beyond the dogs themselves, the new owners have a story to tell about how the experience has changed them.

The beginning is touch and go. All the dogs seized from Vick’s estate were considered too aggressive for rehabilitation; PETA called them “a ticking time bomb.” The decision of the dogs’ future went to court, and in the face of thousands of emails and hundreds of phone calls in support of saving the dogs, a judge decided they could live in the care of shelters.
