Fake Job Application For Cat Lands Him A Job At A Museum

An April Fools’ joke entered reality territory when the press took a cat’s job application seriously.

We think a recent prank convo went like this: “You guys, we should totally make a job application for Maray the cat and send it in! Everyone will think it’s hilarious and nobody will think it’s real and… wait, no, never mind — everyone did and now he works here.”

Maray the cat has been the unofficial greeter at the Serpukhov Museum of History and Art in Serpukhov, Russia, since 2014, and now has a job there, Buzzfeed reports. Museum staff thought a fun April Fools’ Day joke would be to send out a press release about accepting Maray’s job application letter, which they’d written, to alert local media.

And it was hilarious. Also, taken as complete truth.

The media reached out to the museum about the press release and wanted to know more about the cat working there. After what we imagine was a collective palms-up shoulder shrug, staff decided to make the cat’s museum employment legitimate and put him in the position of doorman.

Nina Strelkova told Buzzfeed that Maray keeps regular hours. The cat works from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, and breaks for lunch and walks (weather permitted). And every night is a “Night At The Museum” for Maray; he sleeps in his own tent.

“All people who work in our museum love Maray,” Strelkova said to Buzzfeed. “Many bring him food from home and take pictures with him. So he gets a little fat now,” she said. “And visitors love the cat too — lots of them taking selfies with him.”

Maybe we should all be taking cats a little more seriously.
