A Florida family wants answers from the Florida City Police Department after an officer shot and killed their dog, just a few feet from their front door.

Gillian Palacios was packing her car for a day of errands when she ran inside her house to go get another of her dogs who had a vet’s appointment that morning, CBS Miami reports. In that brief interval, a police officer drove by, noticed that the passenger door of her car was open and wondered if a crime had taken place.

Officer Marcus Terry parked his patrol car, approached Palacios’ home and knocked on the door. When she opened the door, Duchess, her 2-year-old mixed breed dog, ran out and startled Terry.

“She was excited,” Palacios told CBS Miami. “Someone’s at the door. She’s excited to see who it is, you know, normal dog behavior.”

Terry immediately pulled out his gun and shot the dog three times. Duchess died right in front of Palacios’ front door.

“We don’t have the luxury of hindsight,” Ken Armenteros, the police department’s public information officer, told CBS Miami. “We have to use the information that is given to us in a split second so the officer has to make that decision with the information that he has available.”

Terry has been placed on administrative leave and the police department is investigating the incident. But that doesn’t change the tragic outcome of this situation.

“He needs to take responsibility for his actions,” Palacios’ daughter, Sage Raphael, told the news station. “If he didn’t want to be in this position [of being suspended], he should have never pulled that gun and made that first move.”

  • RIP POOR DUTCHESS YOU DID NOT DESERVE TO DIE SUCH A HORRIBLE DEATH BY THIS COP!!! WHY DID HE NEED TO PUMP THREE SHOTS INTO THIS DOG EVEN IF HE FELT THREATENED??? THE FIRST BULLET STOPPED HER SO THIS WAS OVERKILL TO THE FIRST DEGREE. THIS HORRIFIC STORY OF COP SHOOTS FIRST AND THEN THINKS MUST STOP. I KNOW THAT COPS HAVE A VERY STRESSFUL AND DANGEROUS JOB BUT THEY MUST BE TRAINED ON HOW TO HANDLE ANIMALS. WITH THAT SAID, THEY MUST BE TAUGHT NOT TO FIRE TO KILL FIRST. THEY CARRY TASER GUNS, AND BATONS USE THESE FIRST AND IF THEY MUST SHOOT WHY CAN’T THEY SHOOT TO HURT NOT TO KILL??? I SAW THE VIDEO ON DUTCHESS AND THERE IS NO MISTAKE THIS SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED. THIS POOR DOG DID NOT DESERVE TO DIE THIS WAY. SHE WAGGED HER LITTLE TAIL UNTIL SHE DIED. I STILL GET EMOTIONAL WHEN I THINK OF WHY THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPENED. I HOPE THE OWNERS SUE TO GET OFFICERS PROPERLY TRAINED SO THIS DOESN’T HAPPEN AGAIN AND TO MAKE SURE THAT DUTCHESS DID NOT DIE IN VAIN. NO WONDER THERE IS SUCH A STRAIN ON COP RELATIONS WITH THE PUBLIC BECAUSE THIS HAPPENS WAY TOO OFTEN.

BY THE WAY DID THE COP GET FIRED??? THE WAY HE HANDLED THIS I THINK THAT HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN.

  • I know police have a difficult job but they must be trained on how to handle animals. Don’t shoot to kill. I agree that other options are available and should be used. Taze first or shoot to wound. And this was overkill,
