skunk-cat I rescued a cat that had been sprayed by a skunk. Any ideas for removing an old skunk spray? I’d really like something that doesn’t require a bath. –Brenda McKinzie Johnson

Poor kitty. I hope being rescued helps her feel better about getting sprayed. Unfortunately, a bath really is the best course of action. Your cat won’t be happy about this, so don a shirt with long sleeves and a pair of rubber gloves once your de-skunking solution has been mixed, you’ve enlisted the help of a sympathetic friend and your cat is contained. Here’s the recipe:
    •    1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
    •    1 tsp liquid dish soup
    •    ¼ cup baking soda

Apply this to a dry coat and scrub, then let it sit and work its wonders for 5-10 minutes. Discard any leftover solution. Rinse thoroughly with water. Rewash with gentle cat shampoo and conditioner. Change into clean clothes. Toss out de-skunking clothing if it’s been contaminated. Reward your new cat with something she likes: treats, cuddles, playtime. She may need some time to sulk first.
