The dogs and cats currently residing at three Western Illinois animal shelters are getting some extra love and attention from a pint-size source.

Instead of asking for gifts for his fifth birthday, Dalton Shaw asked friends and family who attended his party to bring supplies for rescue dogs and cats at area shelters, The Huffington Post reports. And his guests didn’t disappoint.

Dalton reportedly was inundated with dog and cat food, toys and treats, and some donated cash — about $255 in total — to the young boy’s birthday cause. The lucky animals reside at Heartland Pet Welfare, Carroll County Humane Society and Jo Daviess County Humane Society, all near the family’s Savanna, Illinois, home.

“He just has such a big heart,” Stephanie Shaw, Dalton’s mother, told HuffPost. “He was so excited.”

Shaw said that donating needed items to local shelters is something her family has done in the past. And with receiving so many toys and presents recently for Christmas, she suggested Dalton do something different for his special day and give back. The young animal lover decided he wanted guests invited to his birthday bowling party to help him help the sheltered animals.

“The response was overwhelming,” Shaw told HuffPost. “I had expected a little bag of treats from people here and there.”

And when Dalton’s parents asked him what they could give him for his birthday as his personal present, he said no gifts were needed. The adorable boy — who has two rescue dogs and two rescue cats himself – reportedly just asked for money to help other rescue animals in need.

Now that’s giving from the heart!
