“This kitten will be euthanized in THREE HOURS! Can you save her?”
If you’re an animal lover, chances are you occasionally get emails or Facebook posts like this. And if you’re like most people, it tears your heart out, but since you don’t think you can help, you delete the message. Texas-based feline foster parent Sarah Bate is hoping to get you to do something different the next time you see one of these appeals.
For Bate, nothing inspires a sense of urgency or purpose for her quite like the ‘kill list’ at her local shelter, Austin’s Town Lake Animal Center. Once a cat is put on the dreaded list, Bate knows he only has a few hours left to live. That’s why she volunteers as a foster parent for Austin Pets Alive!, a group dedicated to rescuing animals off the kill list and finding them homes.
“I’m just an ordinary person who has been given the opportunity to do something extraordinary,” says Bate, a 29-year-old special education teacher who began volunteering for Austin Pets Alive! three years ago and has fostered more than 40 cats and kittens for them.
