The Petco Foundation Holiday Wishes contest today announced the 54 winning animal rescue organizations that have worked to help the lives of animals in need. Each organization has won a grant between $5,000 to $100,000. The foundation will start awarding the 54 winning organizations next month.

The organizations have been chosen for their unique work with animals in need. Ordinary folks submitted a unique story pertaining to one of the rescued animals and the rescue organization that made it possible for them to find their furry friend.

All of the stories are truly inspiring, such as the story about an Arizona man whose life was shattered when his wife and rescue dog were hit and killed by a truck while out on their evening walk. The man, Bruce Cardwell, refused to adopt another dog for two years, until he came across Sandy at the Arizona Humane Society. Sandy was hit by a car and was found clinging to life under a couch in a dry canal. Veterinarians at the AHS saved her and Cardwell, after fostering her for several months, turned her in. During an adoption fundraiser, unbeknownst to Cardwell, his friends and family donated the money to adopt Sandy for him.

Another inspiring story came out of Boston. A pit bull had run onto some train tracks and gotten hit by a train. Molly was found on the tracks by Amtrak Officer Kevin McMullen, who brought the dog to the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter where veterinarians performed surgery to remove what was left of her hind leg that was severed by the train as well as part of her tail. McMullen’s girlfriend, Claire Giambi, says McMullen visited Molly when he could and in her story, she told the Petco Foundation’s Holiday Wishes campaign that Molly helped McMullen open up emotionally, something that Giambi hadn’t witnessed in six years of dating. The couple then adopted Molly, who now is part of a family of three other dogs and a cat.

All of the stories will tug at your heart. All showcase the kindness that animal rescue people show toward animals in need.
