A little kitten named Smurf has proven to the world that he’s one tough cookie.

The 8-week old kitten is on the road to recovery after he was found in San Jose, California, last week with his fur dyed a deep indigo and his skin covered in wounds, according to the San Jose Mercury News. It is believed that Smurf might have been used as a chew toy for dogs, based on his injuries.

“I’ve seen a lot of animals used as bait for other animals; it looks to me like he was used as a chew toy,” veterinarian Monica Rudiger, who suspects someone dipped Smurf in purple fabric dye, told the Mercury News. “He obviously wasn’t killed by the dog or whatever animal it was, but he was pretty badly injured.”

Smurf was found in a box along the side of a road on Dec. 28, 2015, and was taken to the San Jose Animal Shelter. Officials there asked The 9 Lives Foundation, a no-kill shelter dedicated to caring for injured or abandoned cats, for assistance.

Since being rescued, Smurf has been treated by local veterinarians and has been slowly healing, both body and soul.

Yesterday, Smurf underwent abdominal surgery after Rudiger and another veterinarian suspected possible internal damage stemming from his lacerations. But according to Nine Lives Foundation’s Facebook updates, Smurf is expected to make a full recovery.
