A new invention could open our eyes to a world of cat communication. Or a Pandora’s box of cat complaints. We’ll have to see.
The Catterbox, a collar that claims to interpret cat meows, is an invention by the folks at Temptations cat treats through its Temptations Lab. Videos show the prototype’s creation and some snippets of meow translations.
It looks like the first project from the lab, which began in 2015. The goal, as the website states, is to “use the very latest technology to get to know [cats] better.”
The lab site references studies that show how adult cats only meow to people, hence likely yearning to be understood. Next, apparently, the lab analyzed cat sounds and created a program that matches cat meows to human voices. A 3D printed prototype collar houses an app, which you can program to have the voice of your choice.
According to research performed by Nerdist.com and believed by us, the object is no joke. Take a look and see if you think this is the answer to your cat communication prayers or an entree to cat chat disaster.
