A dog has waited by the side of a Siberian road since 2014, in the same spot where the dog’s owner died in a car accident, the New York Post reports.

Temperatures in that stretch of Siberia — specifically Berkut, near Yalutorovsk in south-central Russia’s Tyumen Oblast region — often drop to -5 degrees Celsius (23 degrees Fahrenheit). Concerned people tried to catch the dog but never succeeded. Eventually some folks began feeding the dog, even putting up a kennel beside the road.

Locally, people refer to the dog as the “Siberian Hachiko,” after a Japanese Akita dog who sat at the same the train station every day where he last saw his owner, for nearly a decade after his death.

Who knows how long this Siberian dog will stand watch. We hope it stays safe, despite suffering from a broken heart.
