A Canadian man is refusing to give up his senior cats even though he’s already served jail time for breaking a local law that states residents are only allowed to have one cat at a time.

Sylvain Brunette, 54, spent four days in a Quebec prison earlier this month after he refused to pay fines totaling more than $1,000 for owning too many cats, CBC News reports.

Brunette, who lives in Franklin, Quebec, owns six cats, reportedly neutered indoor cats who are all 16 years old. In Franklin, residents are allowed a maximum of one cat. According to CBC News, the law was adopted due to problems with stray animals.

Brunette says his senior cats are well cared for. He said his trouble started after he moved to Franklin, a municipality of about 1,700 people roughly an hour south of Montreal. At that time, he told a neighbor he had cats.

Over the last three years, Brunette, who is on social assistance, received three fines — totaling $1,208 — for having too many cats and for feeding stray cats. He went to jail on Nov. 6, 2016, but was released after his family posted his bail.

He says he still has no plans to get rid of his cats.

“I did all of this because I love my cats,” he told CBC News. “I don’t want to get rid of them.”

  • What a stupid law ?? For someone loves cats this much, it is illegal to take the cats away from him. Let him keep the cats! Refund the fines to him. Those senior cats need extra care and attention.

  • If he is caring for his indoor cats and they are no problems with sanitary issues, then I see no reason to punish him. He’s a good guy. You punish the good guys and let the bad ………. away with a smack on the wrist, at most. It’s about time that this was reversed.

  • That’s crap!!! That is the stupidest law I ever heard!!! The 6 CATS are inside, and 16 years old!! They don’t have that much time left, and they love him and he loves them!!! And the only reason why they’re stray cats, is because stupid people don’t spay or neuter!!!

  • Someone should start a fund for this man to pay for his fines and court costs.

  • What a ridiculous law. Why do you think there are so many strays. Maybe if there were more responsible pet owners like him the world would be a better place. If they are loved and taken care of what is the issue? Hello people they are indoor cats …who sees them in their yard ..duh ?!?!?!?!
