Matilda the cat has a look you can’t forget.

The world fell in love with her giant alien eyes about a year ago, when her owners were seeking help from the Internet to fund Matilda’s eye surgery.

Matilda has been suffering with spontaneous lens luxation, in which the lens detaches from the rest of the eye. This condition only gets worse over time, and causes pain and pressure in the eye area. And the day finally came for her to get surgery, and both of her eyes were removed, according to a post on Instagram (@aliencatmatilda) from her owners.

Friends, Yesterday was the day we hoped would never come. Matilda’s big beautiful eyes started to work against her, and they had to come out. Matilda has a lot of healing to do. She has stitches and some bruising and swelling, and is missing some fur and whiskers. You know how much she loves the camera, so we’ll keep photos to a minimum until she’s camera-ready again. Although she looks different, she is still incredibly cute and inspiring! But for now, it’s all about rest and healing. Please though, keep sending your art. We love it so much! Think of it as a get well soon card. She has been recovering since the procedure over a month ago, and her owners have started sharing photos of Matilda.

Even without eyesight, Matilda is still her adorable self. And now she’s pain-free, so really, she’s better than ever.

  • It’s a shame, obviously, that the girl is blind, but they generally still do really well and adapt quickly! But she must feel *so*much better physically! Wishing her a speedy recovery and adaptation!

  • PLEASE KEEP HER INSIDE. SHE CANNOT SEE TO RUN FROM ANYTHING DANGEROUS AND SHE WILL STILL BE CURIOUS. A GOOD OWNER KEEPS THEIR CATS INSIDE.
