You wouldn’t think that Quasimodo would be a popular pet name, but for dogs with a certain medical condition, there doesn’t seem to be a better choice.

A few months ago, we were introduced to Quasi Modo, a Pit Bull-Dutch Shepherd mix whose hunched spine helped her win the 2015 Ugliest Dog contest. And now we’re learning of another Quasimodo, a German Shepherd who was also born without a few essential vertebrae.

According to Secondhand Hounds, the Minnesota Animal Shelter that has looked after Quasimodo, there are only 13 other dogs in the world who are known to have short spine syndrome. That particular disorder is what has caused the dog’s distinct hunchback appearance — and why he shares a name with Victor Hugo’s most famous character.

“He may not be as pretty as many dogs on the outside, but his heart and soul shine through and make him one of God’s most beautiful creatures,” Sara Anderson, a large-breed foster coordinator for the shelter, told CNN.

The beautiful dog has recently had surgery to alleviate some pain in his neck which, due to his condition, he is unable to move. He is also being studied by geneticists to determine what causes this condition, in humans and in dogs.

Quasimodo is not yet available for adoption, at least not until he recovers from his recent operation and is evaluated by the shelter staff. Until then, here he is…
