Springtime is when lots of adorable furry kittens are born. Increasing daylight hours and other environmental factors stimulate cats to follow their natural instincts and breed. Cats are seasonally polyestrous, which means that they can have multiple reproductive cycles during the year. It is possible for one female cat to produce 18 kittens in a year if she has three litters of six kittens each.

Unfortunately, for every cute kitten that finds a home, numerous others end up abandoned or dumped at animal shelters. Alley Cat Allies, a national advocacy group for cats, reports that more than 70 percent of cats in shelters are euthanized. The ASPCA estimates that this adds up to about 5 million cats each year in the United States.
