Researchers have discovered a new species of cichlid in the drainages of the Rio de la Plata estuary at the Atlantic Ocean in Uruguay.
The fish, Gymnogeophagus terrapurpura is a substrate brooding species that has unique coloration in its dorsal fin, making it different from other substrate brooders in the genus. Its dorsal fin has light blue diagonal stripes over a red background and round, bright blue spots, also over red in its soft section.
Its cheek area has blue stripes extending from near the mouth to the back of its gill plate. There is a large black eyespot at the midsection and its caudal fin is yellow.
