If you do anything with the public — provide services, own a business or publish pet-related articles on websites — you’re going to come across a person or two who doesn’t like everything you’re doing, and they’re bound to complain about it. For Luke Wormald, owner of Vinyl Destination, a record store in Tauranga, New Zealand, that complaint initially came in the form of a message to the store’s Facebook page. It had nothing to do with Vinyl Destination’s inventory, but everything to do with the store’s resident cat, Calloway.

Wormald told the New Zealand Herald that the message stated, “You shouldn’t be allowed to do it” and “This is terrible. This is a cat in a place where you sell food.”

The person making the complaint also stated that having the cat in the store was unprofessional and disgusting, Wormald added.

The “food” in reference was the coffee customers can get to go. Wormald told the paper that he pretty much told the person to get a life prompting “a call from the council saying they’ve had an anonymous phone call complaining about the cat.”

Shortly after, Wormald posted about the ordeal on the store’s Facebook page, offering three things the person complaining should know: “Legally all cafés are allowed to have a cat on the premises for the purpose of rodent control; we don’t sell food and our coffee is takeaway only; pretty hard for [Calloway] to sneeze on your flat white that way [and] everyone loves Calloway.”

To the “anonymous” person who called the City Council to try and have us shut down because of our beautiful shop cat…

He wasn’t wrong. The Tauranga City Council visited the store, saying it was not in violation of Food Act 2014, which according to the New Zealand Herald, states that “Animals must not be allowed in any area used for the processing and handling of food. Pet animals may — at the discretion of the business — be allowed in customer areas provided food on display is protected from contamination.”

Based on the comments on Vinyl Destination’s Facebook page, the customers really do love Calloway.

  • You have a beautiful cat and if I lived any where close to you I would be in every day just to see the kitty.

    • I love cafes where they have cats. As long as they’re not in a food prep area WHAT S THE PROBLEM.
In chiang rai in thailand? Go to the cat cafe next to the clock tower – it’s lovely.

  • We have two beautiful felines that “run” our guesthouse called Shaka’s Seat, here on the North Coast of South Africa. Most of the guests love them too. They are, however, not allowed into any of the guest suites!! They are spoilt rotten, and we like it that way . . . =^.^= Your Calloway kitty is beautiful and you are a good bunch for loving him so much!!

  • If I ever get to visit New Zealand, I will definitely visit your store so I can say hello to handsome Calloway (and his people)! Anyplace that has a resident cat is at the top of my favorite list. I recently took a friend to hospital for surgery, and I was surprised at how many dogs were there as “emotional support” for their owners. If dogs can visit a hospital, certainly a cat can live in a vinyl record store. I’m sorry you had to deal with a crank cat hater; they are the worst!

  • I wished I lived in New Zealand I’d come in every day to just to visit the cat if that person doesn’t have the —– to give their name then the complaint carries no merit. Thank you for giving the cat a life an freedom.

  • There is always that one customer that crawls out from under a rock somewhere who cant stand to see other people happy. Sounds Iike a grinch. Ignore it and they will move on to complain about some thing else that is good and joyful to everyone else.

  • That cat is adorable and looks like mine! If the complainer doesn’t like the cat, go take your business elsewhere. I doubt this company will suffer over the loss of one merchant.
Don’t let the door hit ya on your way out complainer!

  • He looks a a big male version of my beautiful Tifanie. It is nice to see another cat with her wonderful markings looking just as proud and happy. It may have been 11 years since we had to put our 20 year old girl down because of cancer but I still miss her and like to think that she was reborn as Calloway.

  • Never fails, there’s always one sour grape in the bunch to complain about something!! Just like there’s always one nosy neighbor on our streets who has no life and try’s to make ours miserable! Why can’t people mind their own dam business!! It pisses me off especially when the complaints are about animals. And when the complaints are about animals I just look at it knowing that the complainer obviously isn’t an animal person so they have no compassion for people as well and who needs em’? Nobody!! So just keep doing what your doing and leave Calloway alone people! I swear this problem is all over the world I guess. I thought it was only in my neck of the woods which is pretty stupid on my part but anyway you did the right thing standing up for yourself, your business and Calloway!!

  • For the cat to become this much of an issue, the person objecting to his presence is only a sign of a deeper question. That said, I would advise him/her to perform a gut check. To wit – what needs dealing with in your life? We often fail to recognize minor annoyances, which then come out awkwardly.

  • So glad you and Calloway prevailed over the anonymous idiot. I love businesses with cats! If I were on your side of the globe, I’d love to check out your records and meet y’all and Calloway. He is gorgeous! Congrats on the win and on the wonderful free publicity and support! I hope your business thrives! Calloway, keep things in order, kitty boy! Rock on!

  • The world is so full of idiots like that “person” who complained about Callaway, that it is hard to imagine we aren’t tripping over them at every turn. I was in a cafe in the Caribbean and ordered a meal. There was a cat under my table and another sleeping right in the middle of it while we had cocktails. Anywhere there is a cat is home to me. All the best to you and your resident kitty. Wish I could come and buy some music and meet the cat. All the idiots out there need to get a life and leave the rest of us alone. Cats rule, idiots drool!

  • If you don’t like the kitty, don’t go back to the store. Why people have to be so petty. Really go to a different record store and leave Calloway alone, he is not hurting anyone or anything in that store. Get a life and take an opinion on some real issues.

  • Calloway looks to be such a sweet kitty. THe person who complained was probably a rat that was eaten by a cat in his/her prior life, and therefore the hateful attitude. Most people know the general rules about kitties allowed to be around in cafes selling packaged snacks. More power to
    Calloway!!!

  • What sour grapes! Callaway, remember not to eat them, both the complainer and the grapes are not good for you.

  • I love your kitty that is in your store. I wish I lived nearby so I could come visit him. We have a couple of cat cafes in Montreal, Canada and they are very popular. They serve both coffee and food. It is set up to do just that. Having a cat in a store will always bring more business; especially to cat lovers like myself and my husband. Meow!

  • I love your kitty. The world is a big place and the kitty hater can find a kitty free coffee shop. As for me I want to meet your kitty. I personally like kitties more than most humans. When has a kitty been judgemental and mean? Name a kitty that is a bully? People are that way often. Got to focus on the positive. The best way to deal with a kitty hater is to ignore them and continue petting/loving kitty. Give Calloway a few pets for me.
