The town of Longville, Minnesota, has an ambassador who has been walking down a state highway into town nearly every day for the last 12 years to make his rounds, greeting his human friends and getting treats along the way. Bruno, an American Indian Dog, is so well-known in the town that a monument was built for him, effectively giving Bruno his second family just 4 miles from his first. He must truly have a way with people.

Bruno entered Larry and Debbie LaVallee’s lives about 12 years ago when a man came up to them and said he found their dog at the end of their driveway. However, as Larry told KARE 11 News’ Boyd Huppert, Bruno wasn’t their dog.

“A guy come in my driveway and Bruno’s a little pup and he says ‘I found your dog at the end of your driveway,’ and I says, well he ain’t my dog,” Larry said.

But the LaVallees took Bruno in anyway and quickly found out that Bruno didn’t want to have anything to do with just staying home doing nothing. He wanted to see the sights and no rope was going to stop him. Tethering him only caused him to pull so hard he’d cause himself pain.

So the LaVallee’s kept him off leash, and Bruno discovered State Highway 84 leads to Longville, a town that became his go to place nearly every day.

“There’s all kinds of people he goes to visit that I don’t even know,” Debbie LaVallee told Huppert. And we’ve had him in the truck going through town and people are like, Bruno!”

The first stop during Bruno’s daily trek into town is Tabaka’s grocery store and deli, where employees there give him meat scraps. He then hits up the ice cream shop for some water, heads on to city hall, the library, a few real estate offices and then just relaxes and gets some love from the locals.

Some think he has a guardian angel, because in all the years Bruno has been coming into town, he has miraculously avoided getting hit on the road.

But age is catching up with Longville’s town dog and ambassador. It takes him several steps to lie down, and residents of the town often drive him home after he makes his rounds.

For Bruno, his life has been blessed as he spreads his joy of life to others. Says one resident: “He just comes to town… and visits.”
