What do you do when you hear your beloved dog has only months to live? You make those months the best ever.

In May 2015, Robert Kugler of Omaha, Nebraska, heard his dog, Bella, would die of cancer in three to six months, so he planned the road trip of a lifetime for her, WOWT 6 News reports. The two have been together for nine years, since the Chocolate Labrador was a puppy, and their bond is so strong that Kugler felt it fitting to give her a grand goodbye.

“I feel like right now this is my purpose. It’s the chapter in my life right now is just exploring with my dog,” Marine vet Kugler told the news outlet.

He started with a date to the Marine Corps Ball in Chicago, then headed east from there.

They’ve gone from Cleveland, Ohio, to Niagara Falls in Upstate New York. They took a turn south afterward to Washington, D.C. and the Virginias. Next, they headed farther south for sunshine and baseball at Turner Field in Atlanta, Georgia.

They’ve taken turns camping out in his Toyota 4Runner and staying with friends, experiencing something new with each city. People who hear their story are filled with compassion and inspiration.

“’Please don’t stop, keep going.’ ‘In any way that we can help let us know.’ And the biggest way is just to have a place to crash when we hit their area,” Kugler shared with WOWT.

While Bella was given at most 6 months, she’s lived 14 months past her diagnosed passing date. Kugler isn’t sure when the tour will end. Follow their adventures to see where they lead at rklifeillustrated.com and on Instagram.
