Founder of World Parrot Trust and Paradise Park dies

Mike Reynolds, founder of the World Parrot Trust and Paradise Park in Cornwall, England died Saturday, April 14, 2007 peacefully at his home. Reynolds, who was 76, is survived by his wife Audrey; his son Nick; three daughters Alison, Helen and Kate; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren with another due soon.

His life will be celebrated by family in a private funeral, and later by family and friends at a memorial party. His ashes will be buried in the Paradise Park gardens. The family has requested that donations be made to the Mike Reynolds Memorial Fund through the World Parrot Trust website.

Reynolds first opened Bird Paradise, later renamed Paradise Park, in 1973. Paradise Park became an award-winning sanctuary for rare birds and one of Cornwall’s top tourist attractions. He established the Cornwall Association of Tourist Attractions (CATA) a year after opening Paradise Park to encourage attraction owners to work together to promote each other and raise quality standards of their tourist establishments.

In 1989, Reynolds established the World Parrot Trust in effort to preserve parrots in the wild and ensure the welfare of captive birds. Reynolds and his wife provided funding and free office space and facilities to help the Trust start off. Under his leadership, first as Honorary Director and then as Chairman, the World Parrot Trust has grown to include representatives in 11 countries and thousands of members and parrot conservation projects around the world.

Reynolds also worked on the campaign, “Operation Chough” to help support Cornwall’s national bird. In 2003, Reynolds successfully released six birds in Cornwall and choughs have been making a comeback in the country.

Before the creation of Paradise Park, Reynolds worked in advertising and was the creator of the Milky Bar Kid advertisement in 1961.
