People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) won’t be making friends with Pit Bull owners anytime soon now that it has lent its support to an organization that aims to have Pit Bulls banned in the United States.

This “advocacy” group that PETA now endorses is described as “a North American coalition of over 50 Pit Bull attack victim support groups, websites and major nonprofit organizations,” according to its website. It alleges that Pit Bulls are problematic animals, dogs that it stereotypes as being dangerous to people, families, pets and farm animals and causing problems for taxpayers, shelters, law enforcement agencies, journalists — the list goes on.

The group calls on the public to advocate for breed-specific legislation that would ban the ownership of Pit Bulls, support mandatory spay-neutering of “Pit Bull-type dogs,” and promote education about the “genetic inheritance of canine aggression in Pit Bull type dogs.” It has designated October 24 as National Pit Bull Victim Awareness Day, the same days as National Pit Bull Awareness Day, and has even launched a hashtag —#NationalPitBullVictimAwarenessDay.

“Despite clear evidence that Pit Bulls are responsible for a substantially disproportionate number of attacks, maimings and deaths, humane groups and tax-payer funded animal shelters continue to encourage the public to adopt Pit Bulls by specifically promoting them through initiatives like Pit Bull Awareness Month,” Colleen Lynn, the founder of DogsBite.org, said in a press release.

Needless to say, Pit Bull owners and advocates have not been pleased with PETA’s decision, and have sounded off on social media.

“I don’t think I will be supporting PETA anytime soon,” one dog blogger tweeted.

According to The Huffington Post, PETA has said that it will be “putting together a feature on Pit Bulls” in the next few weeks, one that might explain its decision to speak out against these dogs.

Until then, for a lot of dog lovers, PETA might as well be another four-letter word.

  • Why do you choose to deliberately mislead people? Don’t you have any sense of honor? PETA clearly states they support mandatory spay and neutering. They do not support a “ban” on pit bulls. There is a big difference. Do you not understand the difference?

Pit bulls themselves are victims of the current crisis, with more than 1 million euthanized every year. Do you think THAT is good for pit bulls?

Trust me, no one is out to “get” pit bulls or “kill” any pit bulls, or “ban” them nation wide. Please consider doing an article that will HELP the pit bull situation?

The coalition you describe also appears to be calling for help for communities, on many different levels. Why would you not want to help communities be better, safer places? I’m sorry, I just don’t “get”this article or the good it is doing.

    • oh the PETA trolls come out to play. Here are the facts: PETA kills all the pit bulls it takes into its own shelter (where they kill 85%+ of the animals they take in). PETA not only demanded that the dogs rescued from Vick be killed, they SUED to try to prevent them from being rescued (every single one of the dogs that went to rescue lived, or still lives, a happy productive life despite PETA’s hysterical warning). PETA has allied itself with groups whose members explicitly advocate for, and give advice on, killing pet “pit bulls”. PETA demands breed specific laws that (if implemented) would of course result in the eradication of dogs called “pit bulls”. PETA doesn’t actually believe in pets at all. Ingrid has said repeatedly, including in the HuffPo today that they “help” pit bulls by wanting their elimination, because then no pit bulls can be abused. The so called “victims” advocacy group is completely uninterested in any dogbite victims that they CANT link to a dog called a “pit bull”… even though they will call ANY dog a “pit bull”. Every study ever done has shown that banning a “breed” does not decrease dogbites (in fact just the opposite often happens). PETA has linked to groups that believes that pit bull advocates (or any organization or agency.. including the CDC, the AVMA, ASPCA, HSUS etc) are funded by the “dogfighters lobby”. And of course, PETA steals family pets from their homes and kills them (see: Maya). They are sociopaths.

      • Emelys, this is awful. How can PETA do this? They advocate saving lives but this is not “saving lives”. This is horrible!

    • Are you serious? You think that Breed Specific Legislation will HELP pit bulls? There is no way that you are a pit bull caretaker, but it’s clear that you are a PeTA supporter. This organization that you are supporting is partnering with known organizations that hate pit bulls. They rally for the extermination, extinction of pit bulls. As far as BSL and PeTA, their big bucks will ultimately support BSL locally. This means that the pit bull haters that want BSL now have the support of a million dollar organization that can use it’s resources to further push the BSL platform. You are telling me that the Dogsbite.org people, and Craven’s Desires, Colleen Lynn and Merritt all want the best for pit bulls? You are the only one attempting to mislead people.

    • Oh Mia, remember the last time you gave a public opinion about Pit Bulls and stated what the ASPCA, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and PETA all felt about Pit Bulls? I spent a whole weekend proving you wrong on every point you made and I also proved that Dogsbite’s website is full of lies as well. If you don’t remember it…here is the link to the OP/ED you wrote to the Vancouver Sun in July of this year.

    • You’re wrong. The people that PETA are supporting, specifically dbo and its spin off cults are vVERY clear about their desire to eradicate the breed.

They post congrats and applause when a pit bull is harmed or killed. Truly disgusting folks.

I have seen screen shots of the dbo site saying “pits are genetic freaks it’s time for all these mutants to die”. Another spin off group from them regularly posts “how tos” on poisoning dogs (while talking about “hypothetical” situations). THIS is who PETA is teaming up with and it is not going unnoticed. Lie down with dogs, you’re gonna get fleas (no pun intended)

    • I have a better idea. Why don’t we just spay and neuter those employees at PETA so that their faulty thinking genes are not passed to future generations. PETA is going down anyway…..Mercy for Animals is the best organization today.

  • Mia Johnson’s post is disingenuous. In a discussion with her fellow anti-pit bull friends on facebook Ms Johnson suggests poisoning neighbours dogs.

Colleen Lynn calls them “genetic freaks” and wants them completely wiped out. Ms Johnson is well aware of the extreme language and claims of unlawful activities including poisoning, shooting and even running dogs over if they suspect they are pit bulls.

If anyone is interested in seeing proof of what this ‘coalitions’ real intentions are for these dogs I am more than happy to provide it.

  • No advocate ever mentions the victims. The shelters are packed with pit bulls. They attack someone every few days and God bless all the poor animals they have mauled or killed. If you look at the victims stories and the numbers involved, there is no way anyone with any sense can defend these dogs. Just the facts and please no more “vicious chihuahua stories.”
PETA can’t ignore the numbers either. No one nor any organization can defend these dogs while reviewing the other side of the story. Believe me, I tried to. I found that many advocates were as mean as their dogs. Basically what you see are a lot of pictures of babies and young children nose to nose with the dogs which is never recommended no matter what the breed.

  • Oh yeah, I forgot. Don’t forget to get the break stick that’s recommended if you own one of these dogs. That advice comes from the Pit Bull Rescue Center.

  • Kill them all! They are killers and I think they every brand of dangerous dog should be outlawed but this breed is a good start! Rots next!

  • Hello ignorance. Thats what most of these comments are. Have any of you ever owned a pitbull? The only attack will be with kisses. Y’all are missing out on some fantastic dogs. No other breed compares to the most loving, sweet, and loyal dog like a pitbull. Everyone needs to realize hating on things you have no idea about is wrong. SPREAD LOVE & HOPE like every single pitbull who has been dragged through hell by humans still does.

  • PETA is a joke! Is it ethical to destroy an entire breed of dog? I say that all the people who have abused and neglected these dogs should be destroyed. I think BSL is a joke. My husband almost lost his left eye after being attacked by a border collie. The border collie was killing our cat Roscoe. I have had pitbulls all my life and have never been harmed. My pitbull sleeps in bed with my daughter and 2 CATS.
