Steven Martin, of Natural Encounters, leads a seminar on training birds on May 10, 2008 at Fairlington Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, Va. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The seminar is hosted by Phoenix Landing, a 501(c)(3) non-profit all-volunteer organization that promotes the welfare of parrots.
Martin is one of the best-known animal trainers in the world and has entertained audiences for years by showing off the natural abilities of parrots and other birds while also educating the audience on conservation issues. He’s on the board of the World Parrot Trust and works with zoos along with his conservation work.
“The event is filling up fast,” said Ann Brooks, president and founder of Phoenix Landing. She’s attended other Martin workshops and has always found them very informative and fun. While Martin expertise lies in training birds for shows, Brooks thinks this will help pet owners.
“A lot of birds lose their homes because of behavior problems,” said Brooks. “Anything an owner can use to help train their birds is beneficial.” Owners will be taught how to communicate with their birds and recognize their bird’s natural behavior.
