Police in Plantation, Florida, are asking for any information that could lead to the arrest of the person or persons who tortured a dog by binding her mouth with a thick rubber band.

The dog, who has been named Liberty by authorities, was found on July 18 with severe injuries from having her muzzle clamped shut for possibly up to 14 days, CBS Miami reports. As the by-all-accounts gentle Pit Bull mix recovers from the first of what could be several surgeries on her jaw and mouth, the authorities are investigating her injuries as acts of animal cruelty. Those responsible could face felony charges and up to five years in prison.

“I can’t imagine anything much crueler than what was done to her,” veterinarian Carl Jehn told CBS Miami.

When Liberty was discovered, she was wearing a collar and a tag that led the police back to her owner. According to that person’s account, her dog, named Princess, had run away from home and — despite posting ads online — the dog could not be found. One person who called the police department’s tip line said that they had seen a man who appeared to be in his 50s leaving a dog that matched Liberty/Princess’ description near a turnpike overpass. He then drove off in a black car.

According to Local News 10, anyone who has information that could lead to the conviction of Liberty/Princess’ tormenters is encouraged to call Detective Robert Rettig at 954-797-2193 or the Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time this type of animal abuse has made headlines this year. Caitlyn, a 15-month-old Chocolate Staffordshire Terrier Mix, gained national attention in May after she was found in South Carolina with her muzzle taped shut with electrical tape. She is recovering in a medical foster home and is expected to be available for adoption next year.  Just last month, a dog in Colorado was found with his mouth taped shut, but luckily, he did not sustain serious injury.

We hope this isn’t becoming a trend.

  • How low can people get? If you don’t want the dog, then show some compassion and turn it in to a shelter, don’t do the cowardly, barbaric thing of taping it’s mouth shut to die a horrible slow death! This just makes me sick. I hope they find who did this and let them rot in jail! Sick, despicable people.

    • You are so right but better to turn a dog that you do not want, to turn it into a no-kill sanctuary than the dog shelter where they get euthanized.
These people who do this, I hope they also get a cruel deal happening to them …. really …..
My heart bleeds when I see these pictures and they stay in my mind forever and make me more depressed than I am supposed to be.
Why don’t these cruel so called “people” – if u can call them that, go and fight and destroy ISIS that way if they enjoy torture so much … wouldn’t that be good … all these scumbags torturing & unnecessarily killing animals should take out their hate on ISIS and go and fight there.
