‘Pope Dogs’ Are Taking Over The Internet

Pope Francis’ visit to the United States has prompted a new Instagram trend that involves dressing dogs up like the pope’s mini me.

Pope Francis is in the middle of his historic trip to the United States, and some people are choosing to commemorate his visit in a rather strange — but super cute — way.

Dog owners are using the hashtag #popedog to share photos on Instagram of their pooches decked out in papal attire. From Poms to Pugs to Brussels Griffons, more and more dogs seem to be getting in on the fun.

And dressing like the pope isn’t just for dogs, either. A few cats and even a bunny have joined in on the trend.

Of all the ways people have celebrated the pope’s visit, we bet Pope Francis never expected this. But these #popedogs sure do have our blessing.

  • Not a follower of any popes, but these critters ARE cute in an odd sort of way. I’d kind of like to see the faces of strangers seeing one of them for the first time!

Hmmm…Popepups…or perhaps Popepooches, CAThoholic felines, & at least one Beatified Bunny!

People can be SO creative! 😀

  • Let’s face it, animals do not like being dressed up. Just appreciate them for what they are and if you can’t do that and really HAVE to dress something up, have a human baby!

    • Totally agree with you Carol and that goes doubly for cats. I’ve never seen a happy cat wearing clothes and yet some cat “owners” say their cats don’t mind…it’s pretty obvious looking at them that they do mind. If you can’t tell the difference between a happy and unhappy cat then you should not be sharing your life with them.

      • I agree with all who think that dressing up animals is not right. They show you that they do not like it. But it’s the person who is doing it that gets the thrill, I guess. I’m not a follower of popes either but I am of animals. I am glad that people are spending time with their pets but I’m not sure their pets are happy to be wearing such get ups. There are many other things they could be doing with their pets that would make both the owner and the animal happy.

        • I don’t know. Not every animal hates it, so I guess it depends on the animal. For instance, my dog LOVES being in costume on Halloween. Weird right? But it’s true. She prances and gets excited, and well… acts happy. Of course, in her case, I think she associates costumes with attention, because whenever we go out with it, she gets a lot of attention. But she certainly doesn’t hate it. Just my two cents.

  • As an animal lover and rescuer, I’d be putting my money where my mouth is. If I even had an extra $25, I wouldn’t be promoting an opportunistic souvenir company–probably imported too.

  • Whether you are religious or not (I’m not), the Pope said that animals have souls and go to Heaven. That may have changed the way many people treat them. We can only hope. For that alone, a show of solidarity in dressing up your animal can be an acceptable and possibly good thing.

  • I LOVE animals but come on, at least these people love their animals and they are only dressing them up for a few minutes ro snap a picture for them to enjoy forever! I am sure they have a wonderful and very spoiled life which would be nice for every animal to have even if they aren’t thilled about a little dressing up once in a while.
    Loosen up!

  • I’m not a fan of dressing up animals at all, whether they be pets, farm or circus. But in looking at these photos I have come to the realization that I would rather be looking at a much loved companion animal wearing a Pope costume, than the frightened, forlorn and lost animals in a shelter/ASPCA commercial. Spay, neuter and adopt.

  • When I saw the picture of MikePond22’s pink nose Pit, I thought I was seeing my Chance…even down to the little pink smudge under his nose. They could be twins! I miss him every day…

  • Seriously????????

The pups are cute but dressing them like the Pope is just downright irresponsible with their money not to mention that it just is not right to have pups “dressed like the Pope” Pope Francis is a wonderful leader and should be revered as such. Come on people, there are animals in need of spay/neuter, food, medical attention, shelter and the list goes on. Spending on clothes for dogs and cats is not even intelligent. Next time, allocate these funds to a cause that will help our animals.!!!!!

  • Please lighten up, all you nay-sayers out there. This is harmless fun and these pictures serve to brighten the day! They give us all a break from the barrage of horrifying and bleak reality that we are exposed to on a daily basis! Besides, not all animals dislike being clothed! My Shih-Tzu literally prances when I take out one of her many outfits – although she doesn’t own a “Pope Costume.” Also, the vast majority of people who clothe their dogs, myself included, can, and do, give most generously to causes working to mitigate and end animal abuse in all its forms! And, you can be sure that people who take the time and effort to clothe their animals aren’t going to turn around and dump them at the pound anytime soon! So, enjoy it for what it is – sweet little pics to honor a man who is perhaps the best Pope in hundreds, if not thousands, of years!

  • I think the Pope would get a good belly laugh out of these, just like he did for the baby dressed up like him. BTW I dress one of my dogs for warmth during the winter, she won’t go outside without a coat or sweater on, but the other one hates coats, so no dress up for him. I don’t think there is anything wrong with it as long as the animals don’t rebel.
