The fan favorite during the first night of the annual Westminster dog show seemed to be Rumor, a German Shepherd.

Last night, while a lot of the country watched The Grammys, tuning in to see Taylor Swift wildly flap her hands in front of her face in that endearing/irritating way of hers, the real superstars were confidently strutting around Madison Square Garden.

The Westminster Kennel Club‘s 140th Annual Dog Show began yesterday in New York City, with more than 3,000 dogs and 197 breeds (including seven new ones) competing to be named Best in Show.

On the first night of the show, the Hounds, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding groups were all expertly led around those iconic green rings. Here are the first-place winners in those groups:

1. Hound
CH Belisarius Jp My Sassy Girl aka Lucy, a Borzoi

2. Toy
GCH Wenrick’s Don’t Stop Believing aka Panda, a Shih Tzu

3. Non-Sporting
GCH Imperious Hamitup Southern Bell aka Annabelle, a Bulldog

4. Herding
GCH Lockenhaus’ Rumor Has It V Kenlyn aka Rumor, a German Shepherd

Although each group’s winner was incredible in their own way, the overwhelming fan favorite was Rumor, the German Shepherd who won the Herding group. The Westminster Kennel Club’s Twitter account noted that the crowd was behind the dog — and, according to the Vegas oddsmakers, the smart money is on the German Shepherd to win.

The competition continues tonight, with the Sporting, Working and Terrier groups, and the crowning of a new Best in Show.
