By now the story of Smurf, the kitten who was dyed purple and used as a chew toy for a dog before being abandoned in a box on the side of the road, has been heard around the world; but the latest piece to his tale will seriously give you all of the feels.

Originally taken in by a high-kill shelter in San Jose, Calif., Smurf was turned over to Redwood City’s Nine Lives Foundation for medical treatment, where employees and volunteers are working to make the eight-week-old kitten healthy once more before adopting him to a loving family. It is at Nine Lives where Smurf, who is believed to be black or gray under all that dye, met Wanda.

Wanda, a young kitten with one infected eye and one crushed eye, who was found starving and shivering next to a dumpster, was placed in the same cage as Smurf, and the two have become the best of friends. Smurf, despite his horrible beginnings, is proving that he is full of love and ready to dispense it all. Proof: the little one gives Wanda daily massages and back rubs in the form of kneading paws, guides her around due to her vision impairment, and cozies up by her side to keep cozy and warm.

“They do everything together,” veterinarian and Nine Lives Foundation operator, Monica Rudiger, told The Huffington Post of the kitten friends. “When he goes to the bowl, she goes to the bowl. When he goes to bed, she goes to bed.”

The bond between wee Wanda and Smurf is so strong that, once the two are ready to be adopted, they will go to the same home, as they are completely inseparable.

Both are expected to make a full recovery, but are unlikely to be placed up for adoption until Smurf’s fur grows out to its natural color, which may take a few months’ time. Until then, Rudiger is happy to have the pair in her care.

“People who can’t adopt Smurf, go out and adopt a black kitten at a local shelter in Smurf’s honor,” she told The Huffington Post. “I think he has a purpose — to get people to recognize that kittens die every day from abuse and neglect.”
