When 7-year-old Molly DeLuca and her grandmother were in the back yard of a Tampa, Florida home, they had no idea that Haus, Molly’s 2-year-old German Shepherd dog, would stand in the way between an Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake and the little girl and her grandma.

But that is what Haus did May 11, and he is now fighting for his life after the venomous snake bit him three times, Fox 13 News reports.

According to Molly’s mom, Donya DeLuca, Haus, whom the family recently rescued after their last dog passed away, stood his ground as the reptile approached.

“Just based on temperament, he was standing up for my daughter, he was standing between, he didn’t budge,” Donya told Fox 13 News. “He kept taking hits, she was on the other side of him, and so was my mom.”

“Next thing we know is, there’s blood and he was limping and crying,” she added.

Haus was bitten three times by the snake, and was injected with so much venom that he is on an antivenin drip. As of May 12, Haus continues his fight.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page  to help defray the medical costs of their rescue dog. The costs, which have already exceeded $10,000, are quickly adding up, according to the information on the page. It is estimated that the ICU costs are between $1,000 and $1,500 a day, and the antivenin vials are $618 a vial, of which Haus is given about four to five vials a day.

The last update on the GoFundMe page has a positive note. Although it says that the costs keep rising, the doctors who are caring for Haus are suggesting that he will survive.

Good on you Haus, you are a hero dog in our book.
