Scientists Determine The Best Pet. And It’s A Deer.

Banish your rabbit and tell your local preschool’s hamster that she is so over.

Put aside the whole cats vs. dog fight for a second. Think exotic pets. Now think, like, really exotic because none of the ones you’re thinking of made the cut for the top pet picks on a new list.

Dutch researchers have determined the five most suitable pets out of 90 mammals and made some surprising picks, the Washington Post reports. The top five, in order of the scientists’ measure of suitability, are Sika deer, Agile wallaby, Tamar wallaby, llama and Asian palm civet.

Paul Koene, of the Wageningen University and Research center in The Netherlands, led the study and eliminated from the judging pool dogs, cats and production animals — rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs, for example. His team of researchers were left with 90 mammals to hold up against criteria such as food, shelter and reproductive needs, as well as risk to humans and other animals.

Two other teams of scientists reviewed those summaries and ranked the animals for pet suitability. But try telling that to our faces after our Sika deer punches a hole in our wall with his giant antlers.

Ultimately, the team narrowed down their favorite picks to the civets and the rest of the unusual animals. Of the final choices, Koene said he thinks the scientists might have been biased based on the animals’ cuteness.

That is the most rational thing we’ve heard out of this entire study. Good luck with your wallabies, everyone.
