VeterinaryPracticeNews.com, a sister site to FishChannel.com hosts an x-ray contest every year whereby veterinarians send in their most “eye popping” radiographs for the year. The categories are open to all sorts of pet animals, including fish.

While this year’s winner wasn’t a fish, a fish did get an honorable mention. A scribbled angelfish (Chaetodontoplus duboulayi) was brought into the Lexington Pet Clinic in Eagan, Minn. as it was not acting normal. Dr. Amy Kizer ordered an x-ray which revealed that the fish had ingested a metal object as well as a rock. Dr. Kizer performed an exploratory laparotomy and enterotomy on the fish, which was risky, but the fish survived.
