Saudi Arabia is a country unlike any other. Saudi women cannot drive, food outlets have separate lines for men and women… the list of no-nos goes on. The latest is a ban on taking selfies with cats, or anything else. That’s right, you can no longer take selfies with your cat if you live in Saudi Arabia.

Sheikh Saleh bin Fawzan al-Fawzan, a senior Saudi cleric and member of the Saudi Council of Senior Scholars, issued a fatwa (basically a ruling) that taking selfies with your cats or any thing else is now forbidden, according to The Washington Post.

The cleric made an appearance on television in April where someone who was off camera told him that people in the country are “taking pictures with cats has been spreading among people, who want to be like the Westerners.”

The person off camera apparently had to explain to the cleric several times what the people were doing before Fawzan finally understood. He wasn’t amused by what he had heard. But he didn’t take it out on cats.

“The cats don’t matter here,” he said in the video, which was translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute and posted online.

“Taking pictures is prohibited if not for a necessity, not with cats, not with dogs, not with wolves, not with anything.”

Saudi Arabia is an ultraconservative country, but an absolute ban on photography “is a fairly fringe view held by some hard-line clerics,” according to the Post.
