When fire broke out in a home in Longwood, Florida, the family dog, Maxx, knew exactly what to do.

The home caught fire April 25 around 11:30 p.m. with four people in the house. Neighbors broke the front windows and implored the people to follow their voices to get out, and two were able to escape through the front door, WESH 2 News reports.

Maxx, who appears to be a German Shepherd, helped to save two children by running into the burning house with firefighters behind him, leading the firefighters to a 2-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy.

Dr. Chloe Magaldino of Sanlando Animal Hospital was not at all surprised that Maxx would jump into action to help save the family.

“I am not surprised, and it certainly tugs at my heart knowing that the majority of our dogs and our pets would do that for any one of us,” Magaldino told WESH 2 News.

“Even though a lot of us say, ‘My dog would not do that’ or ‘My dog is such a wimp,’ I can almost guarantee, nine times out of 10, that they would put your life, your safety, ahead of their own,” Magaldino added.

The family of four are still in the hospital, and Maxx received treatment for burns on his paws. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
