People talk about finding your “tribe”— like a group you have an affinity with. One cat has done that, only his tribe has more of a flock vibe.

Ginger tabby Steve recently ingratiated himself with a group of lambs and emerged as their “leader,” according to owner Amanda Whitlock of South Taranaki District, Taranaki, New Zealand. The 8-month-old cat first befriended the young sheep when they stayed indoors for warmth during cold nights and, after bonding a bit with the flock, Steve soon began spending time outside with them, too.

“He’d just sort of get used to them and spend time with them inside and then the lambs move outside and we started noticing Steve wasn’t inside any more and we’re like ‘where’s Steve?’” Whitlock told the New Zealand Herald. “So we’d have a look out the window and he was just out there interacting with them.”

Steve’s sheep charisma is catching. Whitlock took a photo of the gang and it made the cover of local paper the Wanganui Chronicle. Following that, a video of Steve and his sheep friends went viral online. Maybe that’s because not only is he one of the gang but also kind of their role model.

“He’s sort of almost like their leader,” Whitlock told the Herald. “He’ll just be walking around the yard and they’ll be following him. Or he’ll be playing in the bushes and they’ll be inquisitive, looking to see what he’s doing and following him through the bushes.”

That’s probably because cats are fascinating, as we all know. But for Steve, sheep are pretty fascinating, too.
