What do you think of when you hear the word hero? For some, it could be a relative, a teacher or a first responder. For others, the word hero sparks images of Batman, Iron Man and the like. For a woman in Knoxville, Tennessee, a hero came in the form of a stray Pit Bull.
The unnamed woman was being attacked by a man with a knife when the dog, now appropriately named Hero, lunged at the attacker to save her, ABC 7 reports. The attacker stabbed Hero several times. Luckily, Sgt. Timothy Clay and Officer Daniel Seeley responded to the call and were able to get Hero veterinary care in time. The injured Pit Bull nearly died twice during surgery, but pulled through.
“I don’t think we could have let that dog suffer and die,” Clay told ABC 7. “We felt like we needed to get that dog some help after what it had been through.”
Pit Bull rescue organization Fighting For The Bullys raised money for Hero’s veterinary care. The 7-year-old dog is currently up for adoption, ABC 7 reports.
