Sometimes no matter how much money you spend on a brand new toy for your pet, he’ll prefer to chew on a balled up dirty sock. And consider yourself lucky if you ever see that sock again.

But others have it much worse. Much, much worse. Like the owners of the pets featured in this year’s “They Ate What?” X-ray contest.

The annual contest, hosted by our sister publication, Veterinary Practice News, invites veterinarians to send in the most eye-popping radiographs their practices have encountered. The winners are chosen by the magazine’s staff and receive cash prizes.

This year, Gordon Schmucker, DVM, of Lisbon Veterinary Clinic in Lisbon, Ohio, submitted the winning X-ray. It belonged to Zeus, a 1-year-old Doberman Pinscher who had swallowed 26 golf balls. Apparently, Zeus loves to chase golf balls, but no one realized he was eating them, too. As the first place winner, Schmucker took home $1,500.

You can also vote for you favorite in the first-ever People’s Choice contest, brought to you by Sentinel, for a chance to win a $500 VISA gift card. Vote for your favorite by clicking here.

And don’t forget to tell us your favorite X-ray with the hashtag #TheyAteWhat.

If this contest proves anything, it’s that some pets will eat anything. And while these X-rays may make for a good laugh, such situations can be deadly. If you suspect your pet has swallowed a foreign object, contact your vet right way.
