‘Tis the Season to Give to Shelter Pets

Operation Santa Paws gives abandoned cats and dogs a little holiday cheer.

This week, Fudge and the rest of the team are on vacation – no product testing because I am getting ready for Operation Santa Paws. This is a huge toy-and-treat drive for shelter pets organized by Justin Rudd of Long Beach, Calif., to give abandoned and abused pets a little cheer this time of year.

Rudd started this goodwill drive several years ago. On Saturday he and his elves (including me) will visit at least six shelters. The wonderful thing is that his community spirit has gone national

Needless to say Fudge was very perplexed when I produced a suitcase full of toys and started spreading them all over the carpet, dividing them up into dog and cat piles and didn’t invite her to come and play or even “help.”

The suitcase had her further confused because she rightfully associates cases with someone going somewhere, which she hates.  Eventually she went off to snooze and pretended not to notice although it was very obvious she was keeping a watchful eye.

I won’t be dressing up in a Santa outfit. I leave that to Justin Rudd; he makes a purrfect Santa Paws, albeit a very tall and buff one!

It’s such a wonderful way to give to animals and shelters this time of year.

I hope lots of CatChannel readers will join me and take part if there’s a shelter close by. So come down and help spread some cheer. Check out the list here.

And if there isn’t a Santa Paws event in your town, you can still take toys and cleaning supplies to the nearest shelter or rescue group.

It always feels good to give.
