Fires that began on Friday still burn across an area north of Los Angeles, California, consuming a total of 22,000 acres so far. More than 1,000 people have been evacuated and 18 homes have been destroyed, according to ABC 7, but a least one positive story from an unlikely evacuee has emerged: A tortoise who escaped on foot.

County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control officials picked up a 75-pound tortoise on a Santa Clarita, California, street recently as he distanced himself from the Sand Fire, the news outlet reports. The department is asking the public for help in finding his owner.

Soon after ABC 7, the tortoise was reunited with his family after resting comfortably at the Castaic Animal Care Center. “Pebbles,” as the tortoise is known, was welcomed with open arms by his family who said they were relieved to find him, according to the news outlet.
