Guinness Book of World Records names Merlin as the cat with the loudest purr in the world.

Guinness Book of World Records features many unique categories, but the one we’re loving the most at the moment: world’s loudest purr.
;
Previously, the title was held by Smokey, a cat who passed away in August 2014, who purred at 67.7 decibels; but the title has now been handed to a U.K. feline named Merlin who purrs at a registered 67.8 decibels (his pet parent, Tracy Westwood, says she can hear him purring over the sound of her hairdryer), and, at times, has reached 100 decibels. What makes Merlin’s story even greater? The purring kitty started off as an underdog.

Merlin’s life began in a U.K. shelter, where he was rescued by Westwood as a kitten, and introduced to love, affection, and tuna. Yes, you read that right … tuna. When Guinness World Records officials visited Merlin to test his purring skills, he was very bashful about showing off until a bowl of tuna was introduced, and he let the purrs fly.

“Here at Guinness World Records we enjoy coming across your typical everyday pet with a rather unique talent and Merlin the Cat from Torquay is just that,” a Guinness World Records spokesperson said in a press release. “It was amazing to see just how loud his purr was in person and, despite a couple of readings of Merlin’s purr just under the current record, a bowl of tuna cat food proved to make all the difference and secure the record.”
