Video: Homemade Treats Your Dog Will Love

Learn how to make three different dog goodies, courtesy of Rosanna Pansino of Nerdy Nummies.

What doggy birthday party would be complete without a cake made of meat?

I have two pretty big dogs. They love their treats and they will stare at me every night before they go to bed until I give them one. Even though that’s the only time of day they get one (most of the time), it still seems as though the dog treats disappear awfully fast, which can be expensive. If you’ve had the same issue, an option may be to make their treats yourself.

Rosanna Pansino of Nerdy Nummies has created three different treats for dogs in celebration of her French Bulldog’s first birthday. They’re cute and easy to make, and we’re guessing her dog Cookie isn’t the only pooch who will love these treats.

Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits

Ingredients:
2 ½ cups whole wheat flour
1 cup water
1 cup peanut butter
2 tablespoons honey
1 egg
1 teaspoon baking powder

Tools:
Baking sheet
Mixing bowl
Hand mixer
Rolling Pin
Dog-themed cookie cutters (Rosanna used the Wilton bone-shaped cookie cutters)
Fork

What to Do:
Combine flour, egg and baking powder in the mixing bowl. Using hand mixer, mix briefly. Add water, peanut butter and honey to the mixing bowl. Mix together until well-combined. Roll out dough to a thickness of about ½ inch. (Note: sprinkling flour over the surface before rolling out dough will help it not to stick.). Using cookie cutter, cut out dog biscuits. Remove excess dough and transfer dog biscuits to baking sheet. Optional: Using fork, make designs in dog biscuits. (Rosanna pressed the prongs of the fork straight down in center of biscuit.). Bake at 350 degrees for 18 minutes.

Doggy Birthday Cake

Ingredients:
1 pound ground beef
¼ cup rolled oats
¼ cup shredded cheese (Rosanna used cheddar)
1 egg
1 cup peanut butter
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 ripe banana

Tools:
Mixing bowl
Hand mixer
Two 4-inch cooking pans (Rosanna used spring form pans)
Cooking spray
Spatula
Optional: two decorating bags

What to Do:
Combine beef, egg, oats and cheese in mixing bowl. Mix together. Split mix evenly between two pans. Place in oven at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes, until the meat is cooked all thoroughly. While that’s baking, put peanut butter, banana and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Mix together using hand mixer until well-combined. Optional: place the majority of frosting in decorating bag to apply to cake. Place the rest of the frosting in a second decorating bag with a star tip to give it a design. Once cakes are done baking, all them to cool a little (they can be warm). Level the cakes by cutting off the top. Place the bottom layer on the cake plate you’re going to use, then frost the top. Place second cake on top. Frost the entire cake.
