Hello, little rabbit, would you like to play?

Nature. It can be kind or cruel, beautiful or ugly. For some YMCA volunteers, Nature recently offered up an interspecies meeting that’s sure to make you smile. A young deer and a rabbit met up outside a museum at the YMCA of the Rockies, and volunteers Steve and Vicky Johnsen were able to capture the meeting on video.

It’s fascinating to watch, as the deer seems interested in playing and the rabbit… well, I’m not sure what the rabbit thinks. The rabbit doesn’t run away, so he’s not scared, but he does bat at the deer’s nose when she gets too close.  At times it seems like they’re playing a game of “Can You Do This?”  The rabbit does a few crazy hops, and then the deer does.

Many people compare the two to Bambi the deer and Thumper the rabbit from the Disney movie “Bambi,” and it’s not difficult to see why. I always thought that animal friendship was strictly made up for the plot of the movie, so it’s fascinating to see that such a friendship isn’t completely far-fetched.

The video has been picked up by several news outlets. The original video posted to YouTube by the YMCA of the Rockies currently has just over 36,000 views, but the post on its Facebook page has more than 900,000 views. It’s also been picked up by news outlets.

A spokeswoman for the YMCA of the Rockies told ABC News that no one had seen the deer and rabbit playing together before. However, an NBC report says that various YMCA staff have seen the deer and rabbit playing together every day.

The motto of the YMCA of the Rockies is “Where Nature Inspires The Whole Family.” This video certainly inspires being brave enough to seek out a new friend, even if the potential friend is a bit combative at first!
