The world’s oldest cat has gone missing and his owner believes that he has passed away. Corduroy, 27, who was given the title by Guinness World Records in 2015, apparently ran out of owner Ashley Reed Okura’s front door when she and her husband came home, and never returned. It has been more than a month since he went missing.

“It is with a heavy heart I make this post, announcing that Corduroy has most likely crossed the rainbow bridge,” Reed Okura wrote on Corduroy’s Instagram page, oldestlivingcat. “We miss him terribly and I hold out hope he will return.”

Corduroy was adopted by Reed Okura when he was just a kitten and spent all of his nine lives on a ranch in Oregon. Last year, Reed Okura told Petcha.com that his diet became more specialized as he aged, and she left glasses of water in strategic locations for Corduroy to drink from. The one thing that she believes was the key to him living so long was the fact that he was never declawed.

“We want to do everything we can to keep Corduroy healthy, pain-free and happy for as long as possible,” she told Petcha.com last year.

Goodbye Corduroy, you were an inspiration to many who keep senior cats.

  • Wow, it’s a shame that he just ran out of the house like that. Cats are still moody creatures. Who knows why he did that. I too hope he’s okay.

  • I am so sorry about your cat Corduroy 🙁
He’s beautiful and looks a lot like my cat Cougar .
I was raised out in the country with tons of outdoor cats and when they got old they also would disappear . My Dad said that when the time was right the cats will venture off to die in peace . It would make me very sad but I understood that they needed to be alone even though they knew that they were loved to no end !!
Just know that 27 years is a very long life span for a cat and that he made his peace if that’s the situation .
I am truly sorry if he doesn’t return but know that he was loved and that he loved you .

  • That’s whats cats do. When they know there getting ready to go toRAINBOIW BRIDGE they go run away to die at peace. if you live in a small apartment inna city like me. My old 20+cat honey i couldn’t find her… she went under a table on the corner of the room close to the wall to be alone and died.

  • What a super kitty!! Sometimes when it’s kitty’s time to go they actually will go to a solo place to drift from their body and go home…It’s a much more natural transition for them than for us…Corduroy is being well taken care of..It ‘s us that are left behind that it’s the hardest on…Special thoughts and purrrrs to you and your family…😟🐱💖

  • I feel your pain, waiting for one of my kitties to come home but only been a day but unlike yours she is so young, it must have been painful waiting so long, you did a great job, she lived so long with your love x

  • Unfortunately, that’s what kitties do. They are solitary creatures, not pack animals like dogs, and when it is “time’ they go off to be alone.
