Last weekend an animal shelter in Jurupa Valley, Calif., was broken into. The suspect, now named as 42-year-old Jason Johnson, was taken into custody for 22 counts of vandalism, four counts of animal cruelty and one count of burglary, according to ABC. More than 40 dogs were released from their kennels during the break-in, resulting in the death of four dogs. Two of the dogs – a Chihuahua and Yorkshire Terrier mix – were mauled to death inside the shelter and two other dogs were struck and killed by cars.

Police believe that Johnson broke into the Riverside County shelter with the intent of taking three Pit Bulls who were quarantined for aggressive behavior and faced euthanasia, CBS Los Angeles reports. It is unclear if the dogs belonged to Johnson.

Several dogs escaped and are still missing, including the three Pit Bulls. Anyone who has found a lost pet should call Animal Services at (951) 358-7387, according to The Press Enterprise.
