Fall is here. The leaves are changing color and the weather is getting colder – it even rained in southern California, can you believe it?! The chillier temperatures means it’s sweater season. You can’t walk into any clothing store without finding sweaters on display. And sweater season isn’t just limited to humans. Dogs and cats wear sweaters, too.

As do tiny hairless hamsters.

Silky the hamster has a genetic mutation that causes her hairlessness.

“While she isn’t fluffy like a normal hamster, she is just as cuddly and playful as any other hamster. She does need to be kept in a heated environment, especially during the winter and have a higher protein diet to keep her warm,” Diana Gabaldon, a staffer at Oregon Humane Society (OHS), said in a blog post.

Silky has been living at OHS since her family brought her there when they could no longer care for her. The little hamster spends most of her time “in a warm, clean habitat, with fresh bedding, food and water and a wheel to run on,” the OHS blog states.

However, when Selene Mejia, an OHS animal care technician, saw Silky huddled in her cage, she decided to bring her extra warmth by crocheting the hairless creature a sweater, which she wears on special occasions.

Doesn’t she look adorable in it?

Silky is expected to be available for adoption this week. Check the Oregon Humane Society website for details.
